Business Central is now ecofriendly: learn how to manage your carbon footprint with a few clicks
Did you know your ERP can help you reduce emissions? Here's how Business Central is going green. Sustainability is no longer optional—it's a necessity. And now, thanks to the new features in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can start measuring and managing your environmental impact without leaving your ERP. Your business management system can now also help you comply with CSRD, calculate your carbon footprint, and make more responsible decisions. All from a platform you already know.
What's new in Business Central?
With the 2024 update, Business Central introduces a sustainability module that allows companies to record, calculate, and report their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. And the best part: it’s fully integrated with your accounting, logistics, and operational processes. Microsoft provides full details on the Learn portal.
Key features that make a difference
Sustainability Journals: Log emissions by activity, location, or cost center. As easy as posting an invoice.
Automatic CO₂e conversion: Use custom emission factors and calculate the real impact of your operations.
Ready-to-use ESG reports: Comply with GRI, CSRD, or IFRS without endless spreadsheets.
Full integration: From purchasing to production, everything is connected for complete traceability.
Scope 1, 2, and 3 classification: Because not all emissions are the same—and Business Central knows it.
How to configure the module step by step
1. Access the setup: Go to the Business Central homepage; search for and open "Sustainability Setup".
2. Define general parameters: Set the fiscal year and unit of measurement for emissions (e.g., kg or tons of CO₂e). Then choose whether to use standard or custom emission factors.
3. Create sustainability categories: Define activity categories that generate emissions (e.g., transport, electricity, business travel) and assign them to scopes (1, 2, or 3) based on emission type.
4. Configure emission factors: Enter conversion factors for each category (e.g., liters of diesel → kg of CO₂). You can use official databases or your own calculations.
5. Create sustainability journals: Go to "Sustainability Journals" and log activities that generate emissions (e.g., fuel consumption, travel, etc.). Post the journals so they appear in the sustainability ledger.
6. Review the sustainability ledger: Access "Sustainability Ledger Entries" to view all recorded entries. Filter by date, category, location, or scope.
7. Generate reports and analysis: Use predefined reports or create Power BI dashboards connected to the module. Export data for ESG reports or sustainability disclosures.

Why does it matter?
Sustainability is no longer just a CSR initiative. It’s now part of the financial and operational core of the business. With regulations like CSRD coming into effect, you need tools that help you report accurately and effortlessly. Integrating sustainability into your ERP allows you to make data-driven decisions, identify energy efficiency opportunities, enhance your reputation with customers, investors, and employees—and of course, protect our planet, because we only have one.
So, how do I get started?
All you need to do is activate the module from the sustainability setup, assign key roles like the Sustainability Manager, and start logging your emissions. In just a few days, you can have your first ESG report generated directly from Business Central. The consulting team at Grupo Dynasoft is ready to support you in deploying this new module, which will continue to expand in future releases.
